dating, dry spell, online dating, profile, relationships, romance, single

I’m thinking of giving online dating another try. I know, shoot me, please. But the old fashioned way isn’t working.

There are so many things about online dating that I dislike, but this dry spell must end.

So, dear friends I am calling on your creative juices. I need a sarcastic and catchy nom de plume for my profile handle. Please all, make suggestions. Make comments to this post (Don’t send me texts- you know who you are…). You all will decide and if no one sees it, no one can vote.

I’m putting my singleness in your hands people! Help dear Lula get a date!

And if you want to write my dating profile as well, I’m down with that. My own efforts are coming off a little too snarky, but that’s me. And what do I really have to lose?

the angst of commitment

I know things about myself and I can embrace them.  I’ve shared before that dating is a serious mystery to me.  The bond that people want to form is not always something I embrace.  I know this about myself and I try to work around this self-made obstacle.

But, today’s commitment crisis is not one of the human heart, but still daunting to me, none the less.  A guardian angel made a contribution to the weedwacker fund after the great windshield debacle.  I had been doing my research early on and had some idea of what I wanted and what I would be spending.  So after work on Wednesday evening, I went to pick up the mower from the machine shop (this story has come full circle) and then on to Home Depot and Sears to see what new toy I could bring home.

I made the mis-step as soon as I walked in to the machine shop.  the counter was full, so to wait my turn, I looked at their weedwackers.  $99 all the way to $400!  $400?!  This thing is a metal rod with a spinny thing on one end, were they also selling me the man to carry it around?  I did note, these metal rods looked reasonably solid and well made.  Not really wanting to spend $400, I didn’t bother to ask about them, but collected my mower and moved on down the road.

I wandered into Home Depot and saw a stunning array of flimsy weedwackers in the $30-$99 range, nothing that instilled the slightest confidence.  I was starting to get a bit of a knot in my stomach.  So off to Sears I went.  Again, I didn’t see anything that was more robust than a flyswatter.  The knot was getting tighter and I was in need of fresh air.  I left the store and decided to put off this purchase for another day.

I have decided that I am going back to my neighborhood machine shop and seek their professional counsel.  I’ll do a little more research and ask a few friends what they use.  I really thought long and hard about asking some guy friend to help me out with this, but didn’t want to be the damsel in distress.  I just want to buy a weedwacker and I want one that will last more than midway through my first use.  I’d also like to not have to sell an organ to do all this.

So dear friends, what’s your weedwacker of choice?  I’m seeking your honest opinion.  Give it to me straight.

is THIS real?

I went out last night with a new friend. A real, live person. We talked and really laughed out loud. The only time we pulled out our phones were to put events on our calendars or to make a note of some new place we needed to see or eat.

This fun evening, coupled with a few other recent events, has made me question more this great new world of technology we have so greedily embraced.

I preface this next statement with “I am not on Facebook”. So this nugget got to me second and even third hand.  A friend recently posted something about unfriending people who weren’t “real” friends with her on fb. I think that’s a bit of an oxymoron.  Real friends on fb.  I do not discount that you can reconnect with lost friends and keep up with family far away through fb. What I scoff at is if the ONLY way you communicate with your friends is through an online medium, are these real relationships?

I have met so many wonderful people through blogging. I adore Margie, Chef Connie is an incredible teacher and Neil and Emily have inspired me. I would love more than anything to really sit down at a real table and break bread with all of these fine folks. But our distance prevents this. Who knows if when we were all in a room together there would only be the sound of crickets. We may be the most dull, boring people in the world who only know how to communicate through the written word. I’m guessing that this isn’t the case based on the things we’ve all written about. We are all involved in our communities. We all get out and explore the worlds in our own backyards.

While texting and Facebook may be a tool TO communicate, I implore you, that this isn’t your ONLY communication tool. There is nothing more satisfying than sharing a ginger beer and a plate of fruit jellies with a real live person after texting to set that date.

I want to make clear, I’m not shaking my finger at anyone in particular. This is just something that stuck in my craw and got me thinking about how all of us don’t pick up the phone and say hello as much as we used to.  Why  call when it is so darn easy to type?
